Emerging leaders are the lights of our communities — and this year, we celebrate them alongside Diwali, the festival of lights. Nominate someone whose civic leadership deserves to be recognized.

This year, IACS is proud to launch the Emerging Leader Awards, recognizing individuals whose commitment to civic responsibility, community engagement, and meaningful action embodies the heart of our work. These emerging leaders listen, show up, and build power within their communities, often without recognition and by going beyond what is asked of them.

For decades, IACS has served as the backbone of the Indian American immigrant and refugee community in Washington — not as a charity, but as essential infrastructure that helps families, seniors, young people, and small business owners not just survive, but thrive.The emerging leader award is one more way we invest in that same civic spirit across our broader community.

Like the diyas lit each Diwali, these honorees bring warmth and guidance to those around them, and we're proud to introduce this award as part of our Diwali celebration.

What we look for

Nominations are open to the public and welcome across all communities and backgrounds — this is a celebration for the whole community, not any one group. Nominees should be at least 15 year old at the time of nomination. You may nominate a civic organizer, a volunteer, a mentor, or anyone whose civic engagement and contribution has made a meaningful difference.
Self-nominations are welcome.

Rising leaders The award is intended to recognize rising and often unsung leaders, rather than those with long-established public profiles.
  • Civic Impact

    Clear, tangible contributions to civic life — through organizing, public service, or community-building.

  • Engagement

    A track record of showing up and staying involved — in civic causes, local institutions, or community efforts — without being asked.

  • Integrity

    Leadership grounded in honesty, accountability, and respect for others.

  • Inspiration

    A presence that motivates others to engage with and contribute to their community.
